Bahía de Kino, Sonora, Mexico

Time evaporates with warming spring days and constant sea breezes, and we clearly are far behind in updating information about our project and life in Kino! Another factor contributing to our poor performance is a great increase in social activity, as people here greedily gather before leaving Kino for their respective “other” homes and travels. We, of course, will be staying here, as this IS home; though we expect to do some traveling between July and September – AFTER the house construction is complete.
We’re posting a photo album, this time, (House as of April 2005) including lots of pictures of the house, which is changing rapidly and dramatically.
The new guestroom wing is nearly complete; Perry is painting in the little kitchenette at this very moment. I laid Talavera tile in the bathroom sink and kitchenette area, and Perry has installed cabinets. It’s great to now have a lovely hot shower, after being without hot water for two months!
The awesome garage is complete, with enough square footage to house both our cars, our two little sailboats, tools, toys, etc.! Perry painted it a crisp white, and a “tragaluz” (glass block skylight box) brings in wonderful light. All the guys who come by experience garage envy!
On the sea side, we have a new balustrade that stretches the length of the sea wall, and they are now “tumbando” (tearing down) the old columns that support the porch roof in preparation for pouring new footings and columns. Pablo, who works for us once a week, is painting the balustrade; and we made an “asadero” (outdoor cooking area) at one end of the veranda, again, with Talavera tile.
On the street side, the workers have begun the new entry courtyard, with wall and arched entryway; and my studio area is taking shape.
Very soon we will move ourselves and all our possessions into the garage and guestroom so that work can begin inside the main house. Miguel, the contractor, hopes to complete things by the end of June! We’ll see, but he does have a fine reputation for keeping his word.
And in the meantime, we get to know more about our new surrounds. We attended a great jazz performance in Hermosillo and look forward to exploring more of the cultural life there. We’ve also had wonderful times with visitors from back in New Mexico, even while living in a construction zone! So think about coming. Right now the weather is fantastic, and the view out our front window is unbelievably beautiful! – CK
ATTENTION! Perry has a new story published on RoughRoadReview.com; check it out. One of Carolyn's poems is there, too.
Your website is awesome and your pictures just wonderful. Almost makes me homesick. (Almost). It's hard to recognize anything from the way it was to the way it is now. Such a wonderful tranformation. I hope you're both muy proud! You certainly deserve to be. The asadero looks beautiful. Big hugs, Gloria

Hi Carolyn and Perry,
WOW!!! The house is looking great. It doesn't even look like the same place we visited last fall. It will be so nice when it is all finished. The bathroom looks wonderful and we love the sea wall!! Love, Ann & Jay

Dear Carolyn and Perry,
Looking at the hill outside the front of your house and the beach view I can just about place where your house is from my visit to Bahia de Kino in 2003.
I remember the water drill from that trip... what a great idea to have thought of the storage tank in the garage floor. and what a labor of love prepping all those tiles eh? Interesting technique... I'll have to remember... and here's a toast to the gargage! Great description of space, how fun as I bump into things in my converted garage/workshop/storage area...
This has been the longest I have been away from the ocean... my trip to Bahia de Kino was the last I was able to take my ocean trek... am grateful for this vicarious link... thanks for keeping in touch so brillantly...
much love to you both,
-=Terry=-

Hi Carolyn and Perry,
Ty (Belknap) was having lunch with Terry Lamm today and he mentioned your move to Kino Bay. Congratulations! Your home is beautiful.
Ty and I are coming to Kino Bay to spend Thanksgiving with our son who goes to school this semester in Kino Bay at a marine biology station owned by Prescott College. We are trying to find an inexpensive place to stay (3-4 days) and wondered if you would recommend something to us. Do you have a guest apartment that you rent out? Or know of something in the $40-$60/night range, preferably on or near the water? It would be fun to say Hi to you again, too. Thanks, Barb and Ty Belknap
